Susan and Dan take on the topic of agile learning.

Play Podcast:

Show Notes:

Topic is not fully formed! We are still exploring and thinking.

Dan was exposed to the idea at an ASTD conference. Vanguard University reshaped their design team around the approach.

Comes out of the software industry. A framework, not a technique or process.

What’s different? Rapid development of solutions. Small team with all key decision makers who can meet and move the product forward on a daily basis.

Discussion of challenges in corporate setting.

Susan seems skeptical for the application in traditional education, although she offers some of what she learned in research.

http://agilemanifesto.org/principles.html

Using prototypes versus heavy documentation.

Focused on interaction more than process. How do you build your own team (realistically)?

Agile assumes there will be changes. You are never done. Susan can relate, but this is a paradigm shift for Dan.

After introductions, Susan looked back at how they defined instructional design in 2007. Here is the former episode. http://www.ltgreenroom.org/episodes/22 Susan drew out this comment for Dan to react to: “Everybody has a theory, but some don’t articulate it.” That led to a discussion about learning theory and being intentional.

Learning theory is a topic both enjoy discussing, so the conversation from this episode will continue in the next episode.

Meanwhile, Susan would like to know how listeners’ definitions of instructional design differ from theirs and Dan wants to know how aware listeners are of their own theories of learning when they face a design challenge.
